History Lesson!
Hailing all the way from Boston, Emack and Bolio’s is a popular chain of cream stories founded in 1975 by Robert or Bob Rook, a lawyer and self-declared hippie who worked with Vietnam war protesters, homeless people, and people who fought for civil and gay rights.
Fun fact: Emack and Bolio are the names of the two homeless men Bob Rook did pro bono work for in the past.
What was meant to be an chill spot in Boston – the happening place in the 70s due to its bustling music scene – where members of rock bands such as U2, Aerosmith, Cars, etc, would come by and relax after their gigs, evolved to be a go-to place in several countries for funky ice cream flavors and outrageous ice cream cones.
Fun Fact: Their place is heavily influenced by the 70's - hence the psychedelic colors, and the "peace, love, and rock n' roll vibe".
Did you know that aside from the store’s rich history, their mascot also has quite a story of its own? Stoney, their red-eyed moose mascot, is actually the brainchild of Robert and his friends when they were creating the perfect chocolate ice cream recipe while they were stoned.
Emack and Bolio’s Ice Cream
If there’s one thing that makes them unique, it’s that their ice cream and yogurt are made from live culture and non-fat milk. Using these ingredients was brought about by their choice not to use milk from cows injected with genetically-induced hormone bST, which is what other brands use to help their cows produce more milk.
Fun fact: Since they want everyone to enjoy their products, many of their flavors are Certified Halal by the Islamic Services of America.
According to Robert, some of their bestselling flavors are the Serious Chocolate Addiciton, Deep Purple Chip, Grasshopper Pie, and Space Cake.
