Japanese food is ebi-thing!

With Japan quickly overtaking Hong Kong, Taipei, and Singapore as the most popular travel destination for Filipinos, it should come as no surprise that Japanese cuisine has a huge following as well.

Fukurou Nihonryori is the newest addition to Metro Manila’s ever-growing number of authentic Japanese restaurants. This hidden gem distinguishes itself from the rest with one simple feature: an impressive and interactive teppanyaki table.

When owner Chelsea visited Japan for the first time, she and her family fell head over heels in love with the country, its culture, and its cuisine. This love led to multiple visits over the years but it was one fateful trip to Tokyo that solidified her passion for Japanese food. During that particular visit, Chelsea and her mom went to try a tempura soba restaurant owned by a friend of the family. It was there where they gained training cooking authentic Japanese cuisine.

Upon their return to Manila, they began to conceptualize dishes which would eventually become the menu of Fukurou Nihonryori.

Fun Fact: The word fukurou is Japanese for owl, a bird linked with good fortune, because it includes the work fuku meaning "luck." According to Japanese lore, the owl protects against suffering and hardship.
