Everyone loves finding great restaurants in the crevices of the city. Neatly tucked away in Poblacion is Hummus Elijah, a hole in the wall joint that packs a punch with their—you guessed it—hummus.

When you think of Mediterranean food, more often than not, it’s shawarma and kebabs that come to mind. In Israel, where the owner of Hummus Elijah is from, hummus is like what rice is to Filipinos and there are entire restaurants dedicated to the stuff.

Veering away from fancy, they wanted to be accessible to everyone. Hummus restaurants in Israel are simple, clean, and affordable. That’s exactly the type of restaurant Hummus Elijah has been for Filipinos since they opened in 2015.

Hummus Elijah also happens to be a mecca of Mediterranean herbs and spices . They sell everything from lemon salt and sweet paprika to more exotic finds like garam masala (an Indian spice mix) and raw tahini (toasted ground sesame seeds).

With a spice shop inside the restaurant, you are guaranteed that Hummus Elijah’s offerings are flavorful and pack a punch. “There isn’t too much variety but everything is a wow,” says owner Eli Lapid.

Fun fact: The primary chef at Hummus Elijah used to be the maid for Eli's kids. He taught her how to make hummus himself and she's worked her magic in the kitchen ever since.
