Tomo Japanese Dining – San Juan

There’s no question that Filipinos love Japanese food. From ramen, to sushi, to katsudon, to dessert and to sushi again, the list of our favorite Japanese dishes goes on and on.

That’s why when we found out about Tomo Japanese Dining, located in San Juan, we were super excited. After all, there’s no such thing as too much Japanese food!

Tomo Japanese Dining is helmed by sushi Chef Tom, formerly from Sugi, and a partner friend. As some of you may know, Sugi said sayonara to San Juan after closing its doors about 3 years ago. That’s why Tomo’s opening will probably be welcome news to people living in the neighborhood– they now have another go-to Japanese restaurant just around the corner.

'Tomo' means 'friend' in Japanese. The character for it is proudly displayed on the restaurant's logo. Also, the head chef's name is Tom. Coincidence? We think not!

Tomo is located in a refurbished house with modern, minimalist Japanese interiors. A lot of light wood is used in the fixtures and furniture making it easy on the eyes. It also has an outdoor Japanese-style garden that would be great for outdoor events once it formally opens, perfect for when the weather cools down.

All of our Japanese favorites seem like they’ll be present on Tomo’s menu– sushi and sashimi, donburi rice bowls, tempura and ramen.

Customers have a choice between Batangas tenderloin, Australian Ribeye steak and Wagyu Saikoro steak when they order Tomo’s teppanyaki.

Fact: Tomo serves big eye tuna sashimi--this isn't your everyday tuna! Most Japanese restaurants commonly use yellowfin tuna, which is of a lower grade than big eye.

Other dishes that we’re excited to try are Tomo’s Japanese-style spaghetti, okonomiyaki, and teppanyaki! Special items include: Kaki Cheese Yaki (and Kari Kari Kariyaki (fried oysters)
