It’s October, which means it’s basically Christmastime. And as we all know, Christmas means family reunions, which means seeing that tita or tito who likes to point out all the little details and say something negative about it. Since Christmas is about gift-giving, here are our tips on how to avoid the unwelcome “Uy, tumaba ka!” comments.

1. Get Tanned

You know how tanned people always look more fit than pale ones? Trick your relatives into thinking you lead an active lifestyle (but you should seriously consider being actually active) by getting a tan. Darker skin also conceals cellulite better. And hey, guess what? Now, you have an excuse to go on a beach trip!

We see crazy makeup transformation tutorials all the time online, so why not try those out in real life? Fake toned legs and arms by dusting bronzer at the sides and where your natural muscle lines show. Just make sure you blend it in really well and avoid wearing light colors so the makeup doesn’t transfer and give your illusion away. Speaking of avoiding certain colors…

3. Wear Dark Clothing

Dark clothing is famous for creating the illusion of a svelte figure. Plus, since you’re wearing a dark color, it’s easier for you to hide in the dark where no one can see you (Please only use tactic for emergencies)! So, stock up on those navy blues, charcoal grays, and blacks, stat!

4. Wear Body Shapers

Do it like Kim Kardashian and hide pesky love handles with the help of body shapers. Pros: smooths out the bilbil, makes you look like you have a smaller waist, provides support and helps improve your posture. Cons: uncomfortable, cannot eat as much lechon.

5. Wear Flattering Clothing

Channel your inner fashion influencer! Learn how to create a good silhouette by figuring out proportions that work for your body type. Some universally flattering tips:

  • Wear a top with a V-neckline. It draws the eyes up instead of the focal point being your midsection.
  • Wear dark jeans that don’t have fading or embellishments, and settle for a cigarette cut. This makes you look taller and more streamlined.
  • Avoid shiny and clingy fabrics. Shine emphasizes curves and clingy fabrics sometimes cling to the wrong curves! Stick to a matte fabric like cotton instead.

6. Accessorize!

Employ fabulous statement accessories as a distraction. Wear a bib necklace to bring the attention to your neck, sparkly bangles to bring the eye to your wrists instead of your upper arms, or unique earrings to keep the gaze on your face—just don’t wear them all at once.

7. Wear Skin Tone Shoes

Many fashion pros say wearing nude heels elongate your body and create the illusion of height. Aside from its lengthening properties, nude heels go with so many outfits so really, you’re just being practical by investing in a pair.

8. Grab a Prop

Take a cue from pregnant celebs and conceal your body with a pillow or a stuffed toy. If it’s too weird to be clutching on to something soft, become friends with your little cousins or pamangkins and let them sit on your lap. Family bonding ✓ Tummy concealing ✓✓

9. Introduce the Boyfriend or Girlfriend

… Or “boy/girlfriend.” What’s the other thing nosy relatives like talking about? Your relationship status! Steer clear of weight remarks by bringing in your biggest weapon: your significant other! Just be prepared to answer invasive questions like, “Kailan ang kasal?” and “Kailan niyo kami bibigyan ng apo?” and you’re good.
