But there’s one specialty coffee shop in Quezon City that not only appreciates what coffee is, but also for what it’s for.

Out of a budding desire to explore surf and coffee arose the pursuit of Coffee & Protein, a concept geared to be the intersection for both taste and function of coffee. Going back to its purpose, they pay close attention to the roast while highlighting the nutrition their menu offers.
Much like the philosophy of the store, the design aspires to be the same – every part of its urban bar-inspired interiors serves a purpose. Whatever is there was built with a specific use in mind.
Fun fact: Most items in the shop have names. For example, their coffee grinder is called Pio the Grinder, while their tip jar is named Samuel.
The conception of the store was born way before it was built; owners and siblings Carlos and Carmela Benipayo agreed to open a business before the latter left her office job and moved to La Union, learning how to surf and working as a barista at El Union Coffee. The two fused their passion for coffee and nutrition, and the rest was history.
With Carlos building the recipes – of which nutrition is prioritized just as much as taste – and Carmela bringing on her expertise in coffee roasting, the addition of Joe (of Taco Joe’s, Secret Burger, and Get Greens) as a partner, the trio has managed to build a community that welcomes everyone who enters their doors. The back of the bar is always full of laughter, chat with a barista for a few minutes and the next thing you’ll know, you’ll be part of the C&P family.

True to its name, the selection of coffee products was first in line, but the addition of burgers and protein confectioneries was the best way to introduce high-protein intake. In a nutshell (or a bean, if you will), protein is both convenient on-the-go, but also easy to consume as a meal – but regardless of how you like it, it leads to more productivity, be that for work or for working out (anything as active as surfing)!
