Ask anyone around you what their favorite thing to eat is and you’re guaranteed to hear at least two people answer, “Japanese food”. Sushi, sashimi, tempura, and donburi will always have a special place in our hearts.

Keizo

Keizo Gastropub is a little known Japanese restaurant in Burgos Circle that’s taking a slightly new approach to the beloved cuisine. They’re not a fusion restaurant but Keizo is stirring the pot and adding flavors and ingredients to complement the existing Japanese taste.

This nondescript Japanese joint will surprise you in more ways than one. Inside the place, you’ll notice that they’ve taken a slightly modern approach to Japanese minimalism. A few al fresco tables line the outer area of the restaurant and a few tables inside with a view of the kitchen is all you’ll find on the first floor.

Upstairs there are, again, a few simple table and chairs with a little golden flair here and there that’s reminiscent of kintsugi, the art of fixing something broken with gold.

Don’t let the interiors fool you. Open up a menu and you’ll see the exact opposite. Keizo has all of the Japanese food that the average person can imagine and then some. The menu is huge, literally and figuratively, and it definitely won’t disappoint.

This isn’t the only Keizo branch. There’s actually another one right across the street. But Keizo Gastropub is a sort of incubator for new food concepts that the chef and owners want to try out. The genius of the spicy tonkotsu ramen and the avocado on the poke bowl were born in the Keizo Grastropub kitchen.

While the first branch is often full, not too many people know that Keizo has a twin across the street. It’s the perfect secret spot for you to enjoy your tempura and maki in peace.

The flavors coming out of the Keizo kitchen aren’t as authentic as they come but they’ve found a mad formula for mixing and matching ingredients to come up with a melody of Japanese food that earned them a spot on the Philippine Tattler’s list of best restaurants… for six years straight. That’s plenty of reason to pay them a visit!

Most people turn to Japanese food for a bite but Keizo Gastropub wants to turn their ramen and sushi into the perfect booze pairing. Not a lot of people crave for Japanese food when they get the munchies but just about everything on the menu will have you thinking, “This would go great with a beer.”
