Coffee Grown in the Philippines

Our country has a rich coffee culture to flaunt, with various regions producing local beans that each have their distinct taste and special kick! Here are the main varieties of coffee that are sourced from all over our homeland:

Arabica

Arabica coffee is the most popular coffee type that is loved all over the world. It is characterized by its smooth texture, with a little hint of sweetness at the end. They usually have a wide flavor range, with notes of either chocolate, caramel, or even fruit! In the Philippines, the top-quality Arabica coffee can be found in Benguet and Sagada, where the soil and the climate create the perfect environment for Arabica to grow.

Liberica

Liberica is better known as Kapeng Barako, a coffee type that’s either loved or hated, never in between. Barako has a strong punch, with a unique smokey and chocolatey taste. Its flavors may be overwhelming to some, its texture usually dense, but those who love it praise its spicy undertones with subtle hints of floral flavor!

Robusta

Robusta coffee is notorious for its bitterness and powerful taste. Its texture can be grainy and a little rubbery, which is why it’s primarily utilized for espresso and instant coffee. Robusta is widely popular in Cordillera, where residents prepare their Kalinga Brew (their name for Robusta coffee) by putting the grounds in boiling water mixed with brown sugar.

Excelsa

Coffee enthusiasts often describe Excelsa’s taste as somewhat mysterious to the palate. Excelsa coffee has notes of tartness and fruitiness but also possesses dark and deep, roasted flavors!
