What to expect before the bell rings

If you’re looking for a fun way to get some cardio in while keeping it fresh and fun, then boxing might be the activity for you!

Though most of us have probably put on a pair of gloves and worked out in the ring before, it can be a daunting and intimidating experience for those who are just about to try it out. Read on for a quick guide on some of the things you can expect when you take on your first boxing class.

Start it Off Sweating

The first step to your first boxing session is actually a lot of steps in quick succession. That’s right, much like every other workout, it all begins with a proper warm-up. Expect to jog, jump, and scramble around the ring for a couple of laps while following the lead of your instructor. Don’t go all-out though, remember that this is only to warm your body up for what’s ahead!

It’s during the warm-up where you’ll probably start hearing a high-pitched, digital bell. It rings to signify the start or end of every “set”, so we suggest you get acquainted with this bell- it’ll be the boss of you for the next hour or so.

Wrap it Up

After about five to ten minutes of cardio, it’ll finally be time to get started on what you came to do- boxing! Before you get to the mitts and bags, however, you need to get your hand wraps on.

You can usually borrow (or rent) hand wraps at your boxing gym, but these are typically used and possibly smelly! If this is an issue for you, it’s recommended that you bring your own wraps to make sure they’re unused and fresh- the same applies for boxing gloves.

It’s All About Form

Now that you’ve got your wraps and gloves on, it’s finally time to start hitting something! But before you unleash your inner Rocky, you need to make sure that your punches are on point. This is where your boxing instructor comes in; they’ll be your guide to making sure that every jab, straight, and hook hits the mark the way it’s supposed to.

Don’t be afraid to take your time in getting your form down– after all, it’ll be the foundation not only for this boxing session but for all of your future ones, as well.

It’s also All About Fun

Once you’ve gotten into the groove of things, you might notice your body loosening up and being less tight- this is a good thing! Even as a serious and technical sport, boxing is stimulating, rewarding, and fun at heart. In fact, you probably end up punching and moving better when you’re “feeling it” instead of being robotically focused on every movement.

From letting it all out on the heavy bag to working up to a heart-pounding pace on the speed bag to learning to be comfortable on the mitts and in the ring, there’s sure to be a drill in every boxing session that you’ll enjoy. Just be sure to keep your eyes open, always activate your core, and don’t forget to breathe!

Keep it Moving

Aside from the standard boxing drills, bag work, and sparring that you’re probably already expecting, each boxing session also challenges you to do a lot of movement drills.
