With the rise of the slow food movement and vegetarianism since the early noughties, the beloved vegetarian restaurant Edgy Veggy on Brixton Street, Kapitolyo has expanded into many departments other than just a cafe. Currently a full service commissary and catering company, Edgy Veggy still continues to satisfy healthy cravings in the neighborhood with The Good Seed.

“[It’s] our retail space, a cozy home away from home. [It’s a] cafe where you can get delicious comfort food,” says owner Denise Caldran.

The place is a modern take on a traditional ancestral home with ceramic tile accents on the floor and wrought iron lights and balusters by the bar. It’s a casual dining place where people can find respite from the traffic and the crowds.

The new menu still boasts of old Filipino favorites from the past menu like tapa, callos, longganiza, and sisig (all made with mushrooms) served with garlic brown rice and a side of salad. It’s tasty and satisfying that perhaps meat eaters wouldn’t even notice that these dishes are not made of just vegetables!

Other dishes included from the past menu which old timers can still order are the Big Burger Burrito (made with mushroom burger, barbecue beans, cilantro, salsa, and tomato rice) and the Korean Rice plate (made with kimchi and vegetable rice).

Fun Fact: The kitchen only uses natural vegetables, mushrooms, and non-GMO tofu. They make all their sauces and condiments from scratch, too.

Noodle lovers rejoice because they’ve added new items. The Vegan Laksa is becoming a quick favorite, it’s made with rice noodles, tofu, mushroom, vegetables and coconut milk. If you love pasta, go for the Penne Marinara, it’s penne pasta in tomato-based sauce, served with crisp mushrooms.

For drinks, they offer natural beverages such as Malunggay Iced Tea, Ginger and Turmeric drink, Fresh Calamansi with coco-nectar, and an assortment of fruit shakes and smoothies.

For coffee, they have partnered with Current Swell, a home-grown coffee company that uses fair trade Philippine coffee beans.

Try also their pot of Soy Chai Latte, it is an heirloom recipe from the owner’s Indian relatives. Definitely a crowd favorite and is best paired with a slice of their gluten-free brownie.

The Good Seed has a deli section where customers can find healthy snacks like lentil crackers, fruit-seed-and-nut balls, chocolate pistachio balls, and cassava chips. Bottled products are also sold.

Insider tip: The Salsa Monja (olive pickle) is another great secret from the deli shelf. A must-have in every home. “It is a gluten-free version of an old family recipe. It adds zest in everything I eat it with,” shares Denise.

For those who would like to prepare a healthy meal at home, frozen goods—tapa, burger, longganiza, callos (all made with mushroom), and chickpea burgers—are ready to go.

End your stay at The Good Seed with something sweet. Choose from Cashew Brownie (served with tea syrup), Panna Cotta (served with fruit coulis), or Apple Strudel (served with vanilla sauce).
